OSS-ILS Survey

Via LISNews:

As part of an IMLS funded Early Career Research Grant, Dr. Vandana Singh (Assistant Professor, School of Information Sciences at University of Tennessee-Knoxville) is working on a 3 year research project that will compare the technical support for Open Source Integrated Library Systems with proprietary Integrated Library Systems.

In this active phase 1 of this research project, we are collecting data regarding the expectations of librarians for technical support and the available channels of technical support. We will identify the expectations of librarians about technical support for ILS (both open source software and proprietary software).

At this stage, we are looking for participants interested in contributing to this study. If you would be willing to participate in the study that would be greatly appreciated. You can take the survey and find more information at: http://oss-research.cci.utk.edu/. You can also direct any queries or suggestions to utk.ils.research@gmail.com with “ILS Survey” in the subject line.

3M announces SIP 3.0 development

3M will be putting out a formal announcement shortly, but in summary,3M is  committed to leading the development for a version 3.0 release of the 3M Standard Interchange Protocol (SIP). This effort will provide the necessary protocol to meet library needs for interoperability between self-service library devices and software applications with the ILS systems to support patron self service functionality.    3M will be inviting the vendor community and libraries to provide input for version 3.0.  The version 3.0 protocol is intended to address the needs that are currently being met with extensions, and other needs not currently supported by the SIP 2.0 protocol.

LibraryThing’s Local Books app

I just downloaded the (free) LibraryThing Local Books App. I was quite impressed with it. I wondered whether it might be US-centric but it seemed to find my local bookstores as well as my local public library. I also discovered a “Spot the Dog” featured event coming up near me soon!

Details of the App. are here

Relais International announces D2D – Discovery to Delivery – the next generation resource sharing solution

D2D allows users to search across multiple catalogs and targets to find items held by their library and library partners. Targets may include subscription databases and other options such as Google Books, WorldCat, and Amazon. The key to D2D is to optimize the user’s ability to discover items of interest and get immediate access to or request delivery of the material with minimal or no intervention by library staff. Material may be supplied locally, from within a consortium or consortia or via traditional ILL. D2D supports the requesting, delivery and receipt of both returnable and non-returnable items. Delivery options include Ariel, Odyssey, Post-to-Web, email attachment, and fax.
