New challenges for library automation: a seminar

Department of Information Science, Loughborough University

Wednesday, 21st April 2010, 9:45am – 3:45pm

The technologies of open source library management systems such as Koha and Evergreen have come of age.   At the same time, libraries of all types are coming under increasingly severe budgetary pressures.  PTFS Europe and the Department of Information Science, Loughborough University would like to invite you to a seminar that explores these shifting challenges in library automation.

The seminar will discuss and demonstrate the extent to which the open source library management systems meet or exceed the same kind of functionality as that currently provided by the proprietary systems.

It will also examine the major financial benefits of taking the open source option.

The afternoon will have two breakout sessions.  The first will be a demonstration of  ArchivalWare – a digital library system that can manage documents, photographs and a wide range of other material. The second session will be to look at system administration, reporting and management information in both Evergreen and Koha.
