Digitised History: the impact of digitisation on research into 18th and 19th Century Britain

20 July 2010, 10am-4pm
British Library Conference Centre, Euston Road, London

newspapers generic image

• Explore the impact of the large scale digitisation of newspapers
• Consider the effect that this has had on research and researchers
• Question the implied changes to research methodologies

Not only has the digitisation of historical newspapers made it easier to discover information about events from the past, but the way in which they have been digitised makes it possible to discover how those events were represented, debated and sold as news. This conference will debate current limitations of this digitisation as well as opportunities for future development.

The conference is being organised jointly by the British Library and JISC. Speakers will include Professor Laurel Brake, Professor Tim Hitchcock, Professor Robert Shoemaker, Professor Miles Taylor and Dr James Mussell.

4th International Conference on: Preservation and Conservation Issues in Digital Printing and Digital Photography

27 – 28 May 2010
Institute of Physics, London

Jointly organised by IOP Printing and Graphics Science Group and Materials and the Arts Research Centre, University of Arts, London, UK.

Co-sponsored by IS&T

A two-day international conference for conservators, digital photographers and printers

Following the three successful conferences held in October 2000, April 2003 and April 2006, we are staging a further two-day conference to examine progress in research on inks, substrates and processes for producing digital prints which maybe subjected to archival storage. As well as digitally printed materials from the world of fine art, the growth of digital photography is now introducing new photographic media into the archival system.

The aim of this conference is to inform those responsible for the preservation of digitally printed materials about developments in digital photography and printing technologies and progress in research on inks and substrates and their significance for conservation and preservation issues and techniques. We also hope to develop links between related industries and the conservation/preservation world.

The event is aimed at an international audience of photographers, conservators, preservation personnel, conservation scientists and the digital printing, ink and paper industries.

Research areas explored in this conference will include current developments and future trends in digital printing and photographic technologies; developments in substrates and inks, including textiles, plastics, papers for both fine art printings and digital photography; and standards for fastness, permanence and the role of scanning and file formats.

14th European Conference on Digital Libraries
