As part of a major enhancement of its library service, the Department of Health has chosen the Koha open source library management system to replace its existing Symphony solution. An ISO 27001 company, PTFS Europe carried out the initial implementation and is providing on-going hosting and support services.
Koha Library Management System
With Koha, library staff access to the system is completely web-based; acquisitions and EDI, circulation, cataloguing, serials and reports are all done through a web browser. The online catalogue offers an excellent search capability and a full range of personalisation services. Koha’s depth of functionality continues to evolve and expand to meet the changing needs of its user base.

Karen Lewis, Section Head of KM & IT skills development, explains, “Koha offered economic savings, is open source and is cloud-based, all ticking boxes for desirability across a number of government strategies and giving us greater flexibility and an increased ability to manipulate and tailor for ourselves”

Nick Dimant, Managing Director at PTFS Europe added “We are delighted that the Department of Health has chosen Koha. Government departments are increasingly embracing open source systems as a way of getting the best of modern technologies whilst at the same time achieving value for money in an open, flexible environment.”
