World Maritime University chooses the Koha open source library management system supported by PTFS Europe

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
World Maritime University chooses the Koha open source library management
system supported by PTFS Europe
London, 8th March 2010
The library at the World Maritime University in Sweden has chosen the Koha
library management system to replace its existing SydneyPlus system. PTFS
Europe is carrying out the initial implementation and providing ongoing
support. The system is hosted on a dedicated server at the PTFS Europe data
centre in Maidenhead.
Koha Library Management System
With Koha, library staff access to the system is completely web-based;
acquisitions, circulation, cataloguing, serials and reports can all be done
through a web browser. As well as a sophisticated search engine the OPAC
offers a range of Web 2.0 and Library 2.0 facilities such as tagging,
commenting, RSS feeds and public and private lists. The system is standards
based and built around XHTML, CSS and Javascript--making Koha a truly
platform-independent solution.
Chris Hoebeke, Librarian at the World Maritime University said: "Ten years
ago - even five - I considered the OpenSource ILS project to be the
quixotic tilting of ideological purists. Koha in its most recent
manifestation has changed my views. Talk about open: If you know the
standard library and information technologies, you can mix, match, and mash
your library data in just about any way imaginable. Although Koha is
delivered with a growing suite of reporting tools, I'm doing real-time
queries of my ILS data using PhPMyAdmin! We decided to host our system with
PTFS Europe because we needed reliable regional Linux support, and because
their employees have strong backgrounds in proprietary ILS companies.
Having made the transition to OpenSource themselves, they know how to help
libraries make the switch. We set sail on Koha next month, and so far, our
biggest problem has been getting the data out of the old system."
Jonathan Field, Technical Director at PTFS Europe added: "World Maritime
University is a good example of how adopting open source can bring big
benefits to libraries. Not only in terms of return on investment but, also,
in terms of fast deployment and integration opportunities. We look forward
to working with them as they develop their exciting ideas".

PTFS Europe introduce cloud hosting platform

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PTFS Europe introduce cloud hosting platform
London,  8th March 2010
PTFS Europe today announced that the software products they support can now be delivered via Cloud VPS Hosting. This platform combines Fault Tolerance with High Availability features and helps eliminate even the smallest disruptions which result from hardware failures. This is an ideal solution for libraries and archives that need the power of a dedicated server and high availability without having to pay a high price.
Cloud Hosting is a step up from the shared hosting infrastructure that is commonly used today. By handling security, load balancing and server resources virtually you are no longer restricted to the limits of one physical piece of hardware. Online operations are not limited to a single server but instead have access to the processing power of a number of servers that are distributed in real time.
With a rapidly growing user base, PTFS Europe promote the Koha and Evergreen open source library management systems. Both of these are modern standards-based systems offering excellent functionality. At the same time the implementation and support costs of these products are significantly lower than those of comparable proprietary systems.
With the move to a cloud platform the financial savings become even greater.
Small libraries can benefit from a low entry level price;  larger libraries can benefit from the high availability and seamless growth path available.
Nick Dimant, Managing Director of PTFS Europe said “By moving to the cloud platform we can reduce hosting costs even further whilst actually offering an improved level of service. In these times of severe budgetary constraints we feel this makes the products and services we can offer even more attractive to all kinds of library.
PTFS Europe will be exhibiting at the CILIP Supplier Showcase on Friday 12th March at CILIP, Ridgmount Street, London WC1E 7AE.
