Glasgow Colleges Library Group (GCLG), which consists of City of Glasgow College, Glasgow Kelvin College and Glasgow Clyde College, has chosen Koha as its new library management system to replace the existing solutions from SirsiDynix. Part of the project includes further enhancing the consortial capabilities of Koha. The team at PTFS Europe will be implementing Koha and providing on-going hosting and support services.
Koha Library Management System
The Koha library management system is a completely web-based application providing staff and public users with access to the system through web browsers. The system comprises core modules: acquisitions with EDI, circulation, cataloguing, serials and comprehensive reporting functionality. The Koha online catalogue (OPAC) offers end users excellent search capabilities together with a full range of personalisation services. Koha’s depth of functionality continues to develop, meeting the changing needs of libraries and their users.
GCLG Chair, James Rowdon said: “The ever changing landscape of Further Education across the Glasgow region means we are always looking for innovative ways to improve our services for our staff, students and stakeholders. Deciding to move to an Open Source solution followed substantial research into what would best suit our requirements. In conjunction with Advanced Procurement for Universities and Colleges (APUC), we settled on the Koha Open Source platform, with hosting and support from PTFS Europe to further enhance integration across our services. We look forward to seeing the improvements delivered.”
The Glasgow Colleges Library Group (GCLG) has an established reputation as one of the UK’s leading Further Education consortia, consisting of three Colleges; City of Glasgow College, Glasgow Clyde College and Glasgow Kelvin College. GCLG has an annual membership of 43,000 staff and student accounts, with nine site Libraries and one digital Library in place across the three Colleges. A reciprocal borrowing programme allows seamless access to stock held across all Libraries. The GCLG service has dedicated centralised support, development and administration with 45 staff client installations in place across the three Colleges. Two Colleges offer ‘self – issue’ and RFID services across a total of five Libraries, with one College operating EDI. Patron Driven Acquisitions is utilised by two Colleges to support and define their current curriculum.
Nick Dimant, Managing Director at PTFS Europe said “We would like to thank the Glasgow Colleges for choosing Koha and welcome them as new customers. We are particularly pleased that they have long recognised the value that comes from adopting an open source solution. They will be joining our diverse and growing base of Koha customers from across the UK and Europe who are hosted and supported by PTFS Europe.”
